Progress on the Stauffer Library ground floor renovation continues this month. We are pleased to report that things are falling nicely into place, and even with some minor delays associated with a large-scale construction project, we expect to reopen Stauffer Library by September 3, just in time for the upcoming academic year.
We had communicated previously that we expected the Adaptive Technology Centre to reopen in its expanded and renovated location in Stauffer Library before the fall term, but we have decided to wait until fall term break (October 15-18, 2024) to reopen the space. This will ensure we have sufficient time to move staff and services back to Stauffer with minimal disruption to users. In the meantime, ATC will remain in their summer home, Douglas Library main floor. Users of the space have been informed.
We appreciate the support that we have received from the Queen’s and Kingston community as the important renovations and improvements to Stauffer Library’s main floor continue. As a reminder, this project - the first major renovation to Stauffer Library since it opened in 1994 - will enhance accessibility and create a more welcoming and modern space.
Key results include:
- significant expansion and improvements to the Adaptive Technology Centre
- a new 50 seat library classroom
- gender neutral bathrooms
- innovative biophilic and inclusive design
- increased, better zoned spaces for quiet study and active collaboration
- new service desk, open reserves, and printing/scanning services
- workspaces that meet the needs of twenty first century library employees
- a featured space for librarians to collaborate with students and researchers
- improved security systems
Where to find services and resources during the renovation
The Adaptive Technology Centre was relocated to the ground floor of Douglas Library during the summer and will remain there until fall term break (October 15-18, 2024) before returning to their revitalized space.
The ATC lab is in Douglas room 405 and the ATC bookable study room in 404. ATC staff have offices contiguous with rooms 404 and 405.
Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Digital Initiatives, and Open Scholarship librarians remain available for consultations, bookable online, or via email. In-person help using library resources, including help developing search strategies and selecting relevant databases, is available from Humanities, Business, and Social Sciences staff Monday to Friday: 10am – 4pm, on the second floor – Room 212
The Helen Howard Graduate Students Reading Room will again be accessible, which will mean the reading room in W. D. Jordan Rare Books and Special collections will resume regular use as a place to explore our special collections.
The Stauffer Library information services desk will be located on the second floor, and this is where you will find services such as signing out material, picking up holds request, printing help, and physical course reserves,
Room 121 will not be available. Please Ask Us to explore alternatives.
Student Academic Success Services will return to their space in Stauffer Library main floor for the beginning of term.
The loggia and rotunda remain open for student use, and the Union Gallery and the Queen’s Research Data Centre, both located in Stauffer Library, will maintain their regular opening hours.
Going forward
We hope you are as excited as we are to see the results of this renovation as we continue to evolve.
